Breast Cancer Treatment in India: What to Expect and How to Access It

A breast cancer diagnosis changes everything about how you plan the weeks ahead. For many patients, the immediate concern is not just the diagnosis itself but the practical reality of what follows: how long treatment will take, whether care will be available in time, and whether the cost is something the family can manage. These are reasonable concerns, and this page is written to address them directly so you can make an informed decision about whether treatment in India is the right option for your situation.

Breast cancer treatment depends on the type, stage, and biology of the cancer. Most patients require a combination of approaches. Surgery is usually the first step, either a lumpectomy, which removes the tumour while preserving the breast, or a mastectomy, which removes the entire breast. This is followed by chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or both, depending on whether the cancer has spread to lymph nodes or surrounding tissue. For hormone receptor-positive cancers, hormone therapy is continued for five to ten years after primary treatment. For HER2-positive cancers, targeted therapy using drugs such as trastuzumab is added to the treatment plan. Early-stage breast cancer, when treated with the full recommended combination, has a 90 to 95% survival rate at India's JCI-accredited centres, comparable to outcomes at leading hospitals in the UK or USA.

For patients coming from Western countries, the cost of private breast cancer treatment at home is a significant barrier. Private treatment in the UK can reach £25,000 to £60,000 or more for surgery and adjuvant therapies. In the USA, a full treatment course often costs $40,000 to $100,000. In India, surgery plus a course of chemotherapy and radiation at a JCI-accredited private hospital costs between $5,000 and $15,000 USD as of 2026, depending on the stage and treatment plan. This difference exists not because standards are lower, but because India's oncology hospitals operate at significantly higher patient volumes, which distributes infrastructure and staffing costs differently across each case.

Across much of Africa, specialist oncology care for breast cancer is severely limited. Access to surgical oncologists, radiation units, and targeted therapy drugs is not consistent in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and Tanzania. Patients who do reach a diagnosis are often told to travel abroad for treatment. In regional medical hubs such as South Africa or the UAE, the cost of a comparable breast cancer treatment course runs from $20,000 to $45,000 USD. India offers the same JCI-accredited standard of care, with the all-inclusive cost of surgery, 5 to 7 days in hospital, 15 days of recovery accommodation, pre-operative tests, and airport transfers falling between $6,000 and $10,000 USD for early-stage cases. India's oncology hospitals have documented experience treating patients from across Africa. Fortis Memorial Research Institute alone reports treating patients from over 50 countries, including documented cases from Zambia, Tanzania, and Jamaica.

Fortis Memorial Research Institute (Gurgaon), Medanta Hospital (Gurgaon), Apollo Hospitals Delhi, and BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital (Delhi) all hold JCI accreditation and have dedicated breast oncology units. Fortis FMRI uses the Da Vinci robotic system for minimally invasive cancer surgery and the Elekta Axesse system for radiation therapy. Medanta's Institute of Breast Services offers 3D breast imaging, stereotactic biopsy, and immediate breast reconstruction following mastectomy, modelled on international breast care protocols. Apollo has performed over 50,000 breast surgeries in the past two decades, a volume that gives its surgical teams a level of procedural experience that most private hospitals anywhere in the world cannot match.

How Breast Cancer Is Treated in India

Breast cancer treatment in India follows a multidisciplinary approach. A tumour board of surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists reviews each case before a treatment plan is confirmed. The main treatment stages are as follows:

  • Surgery: A lumpectomy removes the tumour and a margin of surrounding tissue, preserving the breast. A mastectomy removes the entire breast and, where applicable, nearby lymph nodes. Breast reconstruction can be performed at the same time or planned for a later stage. Surgery takes 2 to 4 hours under general anaesthesia. Hospital stay is 3 to 7 days.
  • Chemotherapy: Administered in cycles, typically 4 to 8 rounds over 3 to 6 months. Given before surgery to shrink the tumour, or after surgery to reduce the risk of recurrence. Chemotherapy is given as a day procedure and does not require overnight admission.
  • Radiation therapy: A course of 15 to 25 sessions, usually delivered daily over 3 to 5 weeks. Required after lumpectomy and in cases with lymph node involvement. Fortis FMRI and Apollo use the Elekta Axesse and TrueBeam STx systems respectively.
  • Targeted or hormone therapy: Trastuzumab is given for HER2-positive cancers. Hormone therapy is taken daily as a tablet for 5 to 10 years after primary treatment and can be continued at home.

Total time in India for surgery plus initial chemotherapy planning is typically 3 to 4 weeks. Radiation and subsequent chemotherapy cycles can be completed during the same stay or on a return visit. Family members can be accommodated nearby from $18 per night. An interpreter and coordinator are available throughout.

Recovery Information

Recovery After Breast Cancer Treatment: What to Expect

Recovery depends on the treatment received. After lumpectomy, most patients are discharged within 2 to 3 days and can return to light activity within 2 weeks. After mastectomy, hospital discharge is typically at 5 to 7 days. Surgical drains, if placed, are removed within 7 to 14 days and your nursing team will show you how to manage them before you leave the ward. Strenuous activity, driving, and heavy lifting should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks.

Flying home is generally safe 2 to 3 weeks after surgery, once the wound has healed and drainage has resolved. If chemotherapy or radiation is part of your plan and you are completing cycles in India, your total stay will be longer. Before you leave, you receive a full discharge summary, treatment record, pathology report, and ongoing medication protocol. Share all documents with your GP or local doctor immediately on return.

Follow-up MRI or mammogram scans are recommended every 6 months in the first two years and can be arranged at any accredited imaging centre near your home. Hormone therapy tablets are taken daily and can be prescribed by your local doctor using the protocol from your India oncologist. MediVenza coordinates remote follow-up with your treating team throughout your recovery. If your local doctor has questions about your treatment plan or medication, the oncologist in India can be contacted directly through our team.

Lymphoedema, a swelling of the arm that can occur after lymph node removal, may develop weeks or months after treatment. If you notice any swelling, contact your local doctor promptly. Management instructions are included in your discharge pack.
