Overview

You Have Been Told You Need a Heart Stent. Here Is What Happens Next.

Chest pain that does not go away with medication. Breathlessness that stops you midway up the stairs. A cardiologist telling you that one or more of your heart arteries is significantly blocked. Whether you received that news last week or months ago, the question in front of you is the same: where do you go from here, and how quickly can you get treatment? For some patients, the barrier is cost. For others, it is access — the procedure they need is not available locally, or the waiting time for a public hospital slot is longer than their symptoms will allow. India has become a practical answer for both situations.

Coronary angioplasty, also known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), is a minimally invasive procedure to open a blocked or narrowed coronary artery. Under local anaesthesia and mild sedation, a cardiologist inserts a thin catheter through a small incision at your wrist or groin. A balloon at the tip of the catheter is inflated inside the blocked artery to widen it, and a small metal mesh tube called a stent is placed to keep the artery open. The procedure takes between 30 minutes and two hours. Most patients are discharged from hospital the following day. It is recommended when chest pain (angina) is not adequately controlled by medication, when imaging shows a significant blockage, or during or after a heart attack to restore blood flow quickly.

For patients travelling from countries where private cardiac care is expensive, the cost difference is substantial. In the United States, coronary angioplasty with stenting typically costs $20,000 to $30,000 or more, depending on the hospital and stent type. In India, as of 2026, the same procedure at a private JCI-accredited hospital costs between $3,000 and $5,500, depending on whether a bare-metal stent (BMS) or a drug-eluting stent (DES) is used. Drug-eluting stents release medication over time to reduce the risk of re-narrowing and are the standard recommendation at leading hospitals. The cost difference is not a reflection of lower standards — it reflects lower institutional overheads and the volume at which India's cardiac centres perform this procedure.

For patients coming from regions where interventional cardiology services are limited or unavailable, India offers reliable access to specialist cardiac care that simply does not exist at home for many people. The all-inclusive package cost for coronary angioplasty in India, covering surgery, hospital stay, pre-operative tests, and basic post-operative medications, typically falls between $3,000 and $5,500. India's leading cardiac hospitals report a coronary angioplasty success rate of 97 percent, consistent with outcomes at leading centres internationally. If you have been managing chest pain for months while waiting for a referral or trying to fund treatment at home, India offers the same standard of cardiac intervention without the wait.

The hospitals performing coronary angioplasty in India include some of the most accredited cardiac centres in Asia. Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in New Delhi, Medanta — The Medicity in Gurugram, Apollo Hospitals in Delhi and Chennai, and Max Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi all hold JCI (Joint Commission International) accreditation, the internationally recognised standard for hospital safety and patient care. Fortis Escorts Heart Institute has been a dedicated cardiac centre for over 35 years and has one of the highest volumes of complex angioplasty procedures in Asia. Medanta operates 1,250 beds across 29 super-specialty units, with a dedicated cardiac catheterisation laboratory performing interventional procedures daily.

India performs over 500,000 coronary angioplasty procedures annually — one of the highest volumes in the world. This matters because procedure volume is directly linked to outcome consistency. Cardiologists at India's leading centres perform hundreds of procedures each year, including complex cases such as multi-vessel disease, chronic total occlusion, and high-risk angioplasty supported by Impella heart pumps. Scheduling is typically arranged within days of your initial report review. There are no waiting lists at private hospitals.

MediVenza coordinates your hospital appointment, pre-operative cardiac evaluation, medical visa invitation letter, airport pickup, accommodation close to your treating hospital, interpreter support where needed, and discharge documentation for your doctor at home. Our team reviews your reports before you travel so you arrive with your procedure already confirmed.

Procedure Details

How the Procedure Is Performed

Coronary angioplasty is performed in a cardiac catheterisation (cath) lab under local anaesthesia and mild sedation — no general anaesthesia is required and you remain conscious throughout. A small puncture is made at the wrist (radial access, the preferred approach at leading Indian hospitals) or the groin. A thin, flexible catheter is guided through the artery to the site of the blockage. Contrast dye is injected through the catheter to make the arteries visible on X-ray imaging. Once the blockage is confirmed and mapped, a balloon is inflated at the tip to press the plaque against the artery wall. A stent is then deployed to hold the artery open. Drug-eluting stents (DES) release medication over several months to prevent re-narrowing and are the standard choice for most patients. The procedure takes 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the number and complexity of the blockages.

International patients typically plan 5 to 7 days in India. Day one covers your pre-operative evaluation: ECG, echocardiogram, blood tests, and review of your angiogram if one has already been performed at home. Surgery is usually scheduled for day two or three. An overnight hospital stay follows. Most patients are discharged on day two or three post-procedure and spend one to two further days in nearby accommodation before flying home.

A family member or companion can stay in hotel accommodation arranged by MediVenza, close to the treating hospital. Fortis Escorts, Medanta, and Apollo all have dedicated international patient units with English-speaking coordinators. Interpreter support is available for patients whose primary language is not English.

Recovery Information

Recovery After Coronary Angioplasty

Most patients feel significantly better within 24 to 48 hours of the procedure. Chest pain and breathlessness associated with the blockage usually resolve quickly once blood flow is restored. The access site (wrist or groin) will be dressed and should be kept dry for the first 48 hours. Mild bruising and tenderness at the puncture site are normal and settle within a week.

Your cardiologist will prescribe dual antiplatelet medication — typically aspirin and a second blood-thinning agent — to be taken for 6 to 12 months post-procedure. This is essential to prevent stent thrombosis (clotting inside the stent) and must not be stopped without consulting a cardiologist. Do not lift heavy objects or drive for the first week. Most patients resume light daily activity within 5 to 7 days and return to normal work within two weeks. Strenuous exercise and travel should be discussed with your treating cardiologist before discharge.

Flying home is generally safe from day five onward, once your cardiologist confirms the procedure site has healed and your heart rhythm is stable. Most patients cleared for discharge are also cleared to fly. Before leaving hospital, you will receive a comprehensive discharge summary including your procedure report, stent type and details, medication list, and follow-up instructions. Take this to your cardiologist or doctor at home. They will need it to continue your antiplatelet therapy and arrange a follow-up ECG and echocardiogram at 4 to 6 weeks.

MediVenza can arrange a remote teleconsultation with your treating cardiologist in India at your one-month follow-up if needed.
