Overview

Starting IVF is one of the most personal decisions you will ever make. The process is medically involved, emotionally demanding, and for many couples, unexpectedly costly or difficult to access at home. If you are weighing your options — whether because of cost, waiting times, or the need to explore donor programmes — this page explains what the IVF process involves in India, what realistic outcomes to expect, and what it costs.

IVF (in vitro fertilisation) is a process in which eggs are retrieved from the ovaries, fertilised with sperm in a laboratory, and the resulting embryo is transferred to the uterus. It is recommended for a range of conditions: blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, low sperm count or motility, unexplained infertility after more than a year of trying, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, and recurrent miscarriages of unknown cause. A complete cycle typically spans three to six weeks and includes ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, laboratory fertilisation, embryo culture, and transfer. Many cycles also involve ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection), where a single sperm is injected directly into each egg. Blastocyst culture, vitrification (embryo freezing for future cycles), and preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) are available at leading centres for patients who need them.

Costs vary significantly between countries, and not because of differences in clinical quality. In the UK, a private IVF cycle costs between £5,000 and £8,000, with medications often charged separately. In the USA, a single cycle runs from $12,000 to $20,000. In Canada, the figure is typically CAD $10,000 to $15,000 per cycle, and in Australia, AUD $10,000 or more after Medicare gaps. In India, a complete IVF cycle at a JCI-accredited private hospital, including consultations, egg retrieval, laboratory fertilisation, embryo transfer, and standard medications, ranges from $2,000 to $4,000 USD as of 2026. The difference is structural: lower institutional overheads, higher procedure volumes, and a healthcare system where private fertility centres compete actively on outcomes. The cost of skilled clinical care is lower; the standard of that care is not.

The hospitals MediVenza works with are JCI-accredited (Joint Commission International) and perform thousands of IVF cycles annually. Apollo Fertility centres, Fortis La Femme and Fortis Bloom IVF, Max Healthcare IVF, and Medanta The Medicity all maintain dedicated reproductive medicine departments with full embryology laboratories. Dr. Surveen Ghumman Sindhu, Director of IVF and Reproductive Medicine at Max Super Speciality Hospitals, Delhi, has more than 31 years of experience and completed specialist training at the Cleveland Clinic, USA. Dr. Hrishikesh D. Pai, associated with Fortis Bloom, Gurugram, holds a Masters in Clinical Embryology and Andrology from Eastern Virginia Medical School, USA. Dr. Sabhyata Gupta at Medanta The Medicity, Gurugram, is a senior consultant in reproductive medicine with international recognition in complex gynaecological cases. Many of our surgeons completed fellowships at leading international institutions. These are specialists who work within programmes handling hundreds of cycles each year.

One advantage patients from abroad often find unexpected: India's leading fertility centres have adopted AI-assisted embryo selection technology to improve implantation rates. Blastocyst culture, allowing embryos to develop to day five before transfer and identifying stronger candidates, is standard practice at these hospitals, not an add-on. PGT is available for couples with a history of genetic conditions or recurrent loss. Waiting times for initial consultation and cycle start are typically days to a few weeks, not months.

MediVenza coordinates hospital selection based on your specific diagnosis, budget, and clinical needs. Our team handles the hospital booking, pre-cycle communication with your fertility specialist, accommodation near the treating hospital, airport and local transfers, and all follow-up documentation you will need when you return home. You do not navigate this alone.

Key Benefits

  • Waiting for a funded cycle can take a year or more — treatment in India can begin within weeks of your first enquiry.
  • Unexplained infertility or previous failed cycles do not disqualify you — India's fertility specialists routinely handle complex cases.
  • Full IVF cycle from $2,000 USD — a fraction of private costs at home.
  • Blastocyst culture, ICSI, and PGT available as standard at accredited centres.
  • Frozen embryos stored for future cycles at no additional consultation cost.
  • MediVenza coordinates hospital booking, accommodation, transfers, and your full discharge documentation.

Procedure Details

A standard IVF cycle begins with a baseline consultation and hormonal assessments, including an ultrasound to evaluate ovarian reserve (AMH and antral follicle count). Ovarian stimulation then follows: daily hormone injections (FSH and LH) over eight to fourteen days encourage the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs. Follicle growth is monitored with regular ultrasound scans throughout this phase.

Egg retrieval is performed under light sedation. A fine needle is guided through the vaginal wall to collect eggs from the follicles; the procedure typically takes twenty to thirty minutes. Sperm is prepared in the laboratory on the same day. Fertilisation is carried out using conventional IVF or ICSI. Most centres recommend ICSI for cases involving male factor infertility or previous failed cycles.

Embryos are cultured in the laboratory for three to five days. Blastocyst transfer (day five) is standard at leading centres and selects embryos at a more developed stage. Embryo transfer is a short, non-sedated procedure. A pregnancy blood test follows fourteen days later. Unused embryos that meet quality criteria can be vitrified (frozen) for future cycles.

Most patients spend fourteen to twenty-one days in India for a fresh cycle. The egg retrieval phase requires you to be present; the monitoring phase before it can often be done partially at home with remote consultation. You can typically fly home five to seven days after embryo transfer, once the clinical team confirms it is safe to travel. Companion accommodation near the hospital is readily available and can be arranged as part of your package.

Recovery Information

The first 48 to 72 hours after embryo transfer call for light activity only. Mild bloating and cramping are common and expected, particularly if the ovarian stimulation response was strong. Rest is recommended but bed rest is not required. Most patients feel well enough to move around comfortably within a day or two.

You will receive a full discharge summary, medication plan, and a detailed clinical report covering your cycle: stimulation protocol, egg numbers retrieved and fertilised, embryo quality grading, transfer details, and any embryos frozen. This documentation is prepared specifically for your doctor at home. Share it with your local doctor or GP promptly on return, along with the medication schedule and any supplements prescribed for the two-week wait.

You can generally fly home five to seven days after embryo transfer. Long-haul flights are manageable at this point; your clinical team will advise based on your individual response. Driving is fine once you are off any sedative medications from the retrieval procedure, usually within 24 hours. Most patients return to desk-based or light work within a week of transfer. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least two weeks.

The pregnancy blood test (beta-HCG) is done fourteen days after transfer. If the cycle is successful, your fertility team in India will provide a follow-up call and written guidance on early pregnancy monitoring. If a second cycle is needed, this can be planned remotely. All follow-up consultations, including reviewing a frozen embryo transfer plan, can be handled via video call with your specialist in India, without returning.
