Overview

Kidney stone pain is hard to ignore. A stone that blocks your ureter causes severe pain in your side or back that comes in waves, often with nausea, blood in urine, and difficulty passing water. When a stone is too large to pass on its own, or when it is stuck and causing an obstruction, surgery becomes the only reliable option. For many patients, that is where the problem starts. Either the cost of private surgery at home is out of reach, or the waiting list stretches so long that the pain and the risk of kidney damage continue for months. For patients in many parts of Africa and the Middle East, the more fundamental barrier is that the laser equipment needed to remove the stone safely simply does not exist locally.

Kidney stones form when minerals and salts crystallise in the kidney. Small stones often pass naturally with fluids, but stones larger than 5 to 6 mm — or those lodged in the ureter — typically require intervention. There are four main procedures used in India depending on the size and position of your stone. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) breaks small stones using external sound waves, with no incision required. Ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy (URS) passes a thin scope through the urinary tract and uses a holmium laser to break the stone. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) removes large or complex stones through a small incision in the back. Retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) uses a flexible digital scope to treat stones deep in the kidney. The right procedure depends on your stone's size, position, and composition.

For patients facing high private surgery costs at home, India offers a significant difference. Ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy costs $1,300 to $2,500 USD at a private JCI-accredited hospital in India as of 2026, compared to $10,000 or more for the equivalent procedure in the US without insurance. PCNL for large or complex stones ranges from $2,500 to $4,000 USD. This reflects how healthcare costs are structured in India — high urology procedure volumes and lower institutional overheads — not any compromise in equipment or surgical standards.

For patients from regions where holmium laser lithotripsy and flexible digital ureteroscopy are not available at local hospitals, India provides immediate access to the full range of minimally invasive stone procedures. Apollo Hospitals performs over 3,000 kidney stone procedures annually across its network. Medanta The Medicity operates a high-volume minimally invasive urology centre using EMS Swiss Lithoclast technology and holmium:YAG laser systems. Fortis Hospitals and BLK-Max Super Specialty Hospital are both JCI-accredited and run comprehensive laser stone surgery programmes. URS with laser achieves stone-free rates of 90 to 98% for ureteric stones. PCNL achieves stone-free rates above 95% for stones larger than 2 cm.

As of 2026, India's leading urology centres perform flexible ureteroscopy using single-use digital scopes with holmium:YAG laser as standard. This technology allows surgeons to reach stones in any part of the kidney without an incision and is not available at most hospitals across Africa and the Middle East. The same centres also provide stone composition analysis after removal, which identifies whether dietary changes or medication can reduce your risk of recurrence.

Procedure Details

How Kidney Stone Removal Is Performed in India

Your urologist selects the procedure based on your CT scan or ultrasound results. Most patients undergo a pre-operative assessment on arrival, including blood tests, urine analysis, and imaging confirmation. Medanta, Apollo, Fortis, and BLK-Max all carry this out as a same-day or next-day process before surgery.

  • ESWL (shock wave lithotripsy): Performed as an outpatient procedure under light sedation. Sound waves break the stone from outside the body. No incision. Takes 45 to 60 minutes. Suitable for stones under 1 cm in the kidney or upper ureter.
  • URS with holmium laser: Performed under general or spinal anaesthesia. A thin scope is passed through the urethra and bladder to the stone. The laser fragments it and fragments are removed or left to pass naturally. Takes 30 to 90 minutes. One night hospital stay is typical.
  • PCNL: Performed under general anaesthesia for large stones. A small incision in the back allows a nephroscope to reach and remove the stone directly. Hospital stay is 2 to 3 nights.
  • RIRS (flexible ureteroscopy): A digital flexible scope reaches stones deep in the kidney without any incision. Used for complex or multiple stones in the renal pelvis.

Total time in India is typically 5 to 10 days including pre-operative assessment, surgery, and a short monitoring period before flying home. MediVenza arranges accommodation for you and one companion near the hospital.

Recovery Information

Recovery After Kidney Stone Removal: What to Expect

Most patients are cleared to fly home within 3 to 7 days of their procedure. ESWL patients can often travel within 24 to 48 hours. URS patients are typically discharged the following day and cleared to fly within 3 to 5 days. PCNL patients generally need 5 to 7 days before flying after a 2 to 3 night hospital stay.

Recovery After Returning Home

Most patients return to desk work within one week of surgery and to full physical activity within two to four weeks, depending on the procedure. If a ureteric stent was placed during surgery, it is typically removed before you travel home or can be removed by a local urologist with guidance from your India-based team. You leave with a full discharge summary, your stone analysis report, a medication schedule, and a follow-up protocol for your doctor at home.

The stone composition report identifies whether dietary adjustments or medication can reduce your risk of recurrence. Your local doctor can use this to guide long-term prevention. Remote follow-up with your India-based urologist is available by video call or WhatsApp throughout your recovery.

MediVenza coordinates any documentation transfer needed between your treating team in India and your doctor at home.
