Overview

When your knee pain stops you climbing stairs, limits how far you can walk, or wakes you at night, you reach a point where managing the condition is no longer enough. Knee replacement is considered when the joint has deteriorated to the point where daily movement becomes consistently difficult and other treatments have stopped providing relief. Whether you are on a waiting list that stretches beyond a year, facing private surgical costs that are out of reach, or living in a region where specialist orthopaedic care is limited, the question is the same: where can you get this done properly, and what will it actually cost?

Knee replacement surgery, also called knee arthroplasty, removes the damaged surfaces of the knee joint and replaces them with metal, ceramic, or polyethylene components designed to replicate the function of a healthy joint. It is recommended for people with severe osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or significant joint damage from injury, where cartilage has worn away and bone is rubbing against bone. Total knee replacement replaces all three compartments of the joint. Partial knee replacement is used when only one or two compartments are damaged and the rest of the joint is healthy. Both procedures are performed under spinal or general anaesthesia and typically take 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Most patients begin walking with support within 24 hours of surgery.

For patients from the UK and other countries with public health systems, waiting times for knee replacement on a public waiting list can exceed 12 to 18 months. Private surgery at home typically costs £12,000 to £15,000 per knee. In the USA, the same procedure ranges from $30,000 to $50,000. In India, a total knee replacement at a JCI-accredited private hospital costs between $3,500 and $6,000 USD per knee, as of 2026. The lower cost is not a reflection of different standards. It reflects the volume of procedures performed — India's hospitals perform tens of thousands of knee replacements each year — and a healthcare pricing structure that does not carry the institutional overheads of Western private hospitals. The same internationally branded implants used in the UK and USA are available at Indian hospitals.

For patients from Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East, private orthopaedic surgery of this quality is either unavailable locally or costs more in regional private hospitals than it does in India. An all-inclusive package in India, covering surgery, hospital stay, pre-operative tests, and initial rehabilitation, starts from approximately $3,500 to $6,000 USD per knee. That figure is significantly lower than comparable private care in regional medical hubs, while the facilities and surgeon experience are at a higher level. India's top knee replacement centres report a 95% success rate for total knee replacement, as of 2026, consistent with outcomes at leading orthopaedic centres globally.

Apollo Hospitals, Medanta The Medicity, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, and Max Super Speciality Hospital all hold JCI accreditation and together perform thousands of knee replacements every year. Apollo's network has completed over 75,000 total knee replacements. Fortis performs over 5,000 annually across its centres, including complex revision and bilateral procedures. Medanta's dedicated joint replacement centre has 12 operating theatres fitted with laminar airflow systems to minimise infection risk. Max Super Speciality Hospital pioneered minimally invasive knee replacement techniques in India. All four hospitals use robotic-assisted surgical systems, including the Mako robotic-arm platform, which improves implant alignment precision and is associated with faster functional recovery.

India performs more knee replacement procedures per year than almost any country outside the USA and China. The volume translates directly into surgical experience. Surgeons at these centres routinely handle complex cases including revision surgery, simultaneous bilateral replacement, and procedures for patients with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or cardiac history. Scheduling from confirmation of surgery to admission typically takes 7 to 14 days, compared to months in many public systems.

How Knee Replacement Surgery Is Performed in India

Most procedures take 1.5 to 2.5 hours under spinal or general anaesthesia. Here is what to expect:

  • Step 1 — Pre-operative evaluation

Blood tests, X-rays, ECG, and where needed an MRI are completed on arrival, typically within 24 hours. Your surgeon reviews your imaging and confirms the implant type and surgical approach.
  • Step 2 — Anaesthesia

Spinal or general anaesthesia is administered by a qualified anaesthesiologist. Spinal anaesthesia is most commonly used, keeping you comfortable and awake but without sensation below the waist.
  • Step 3 — Joint preparation

A precise incision is made over the knee. Damaged cartilage and bone surfaces are removed from the femur, tibia, and kneecap. Minimally invasive approaches use a smaller incision and cause less disruption to surrounding muscle.
  • Step 4 — Robotic-assisted implant placement

At Apollo, Medanta, Fortis, and Max, robotic-arm systems such as Mako are used to guide precise implant positioning. This reduces alignment error and improves long-term implant function.
  • Step 5 — Closure and early mobilisation

The wound is closed with sutures or staples. Physiotherapy begins within 24 to 48 hours of surgery, with most patients standing and taking assisted steps the following day.

Hospital stay is typically 3 to 5 days. After discharge, most patients stay nearby for a further 10 to 14 days of supervised physiotherapy before they are cleared to fly home. Total time in India is generally 18 to 21 days. One accompanying family member can be accommodated in a companion room at the hospital or at a nearby hotel arranged through your MediVenza coordinator. Interpreter support is available at all four hospitals.

Recovery Information

Recovery after knee replacement follows a clear progression. In the first two weeks, the focus is on reducing swelling, managing pain with prescribed medication, and building basic mobility with physiotherapy. Most patients can walk independently with a walking aid within a week of surgery. By weeks three to six, you can manage stairs, light daily tasks, and short distances without assistance. A full return to normal activities, including driving and light walking outdoors, typically happens between six and twelve weeks.

Before leaving the hospital you will receive a complete discharge summary including your operative report, implant details (brand, model, and sizing), medication list, physiotherapy plan, and a letter for your local doctor outlining the procedure and follow-up requirements. Share this with your GP or local doctor on return. They can arrange local physiotherapy referral and monitor your recovery using this documentation. Your implant details are internationally recognised and any orthopaedic surgeon at home can continue your care from the records provided.

Flying is generally cleared 18 to 21 days after surgery. Wear compression stockings and perform ankle exercises on the flight to reduce blood clot risk. Driving is not recommended for four to six weeks. Most desk-based work can resume at four weeks; physically demanding work at twelve weeks or later depending on your progress.

Remote follow-up with your MediVenza coordinator and the India surgical team is available by video call throughout your recovery. If any concerns arise after you return home, your coordinator can facilitate direct communication with your operating surgeon. The implant typically lasts 15 to 20 years with appropriate activity levels.
